And then, of course, the pandemic gave us more immediate problems to worry about – and still does.
In the meantime, little seems to have changed Brexit-wise since Britain left the EU on January 31st, 2020. But, with the UK’s post-Brexit transition deadline looming large on the horizon (December 31st) and still no sign of a deal, Brexit is soon going to be back in the news in a very big way.
The Department of Work and Pensions recently published figures showing a 99 per cent drop in the number of EU workers applying to work in the UK. The figure for non-EU nationals registering for a National Insurance number has fallen substantially too, down almost two-thirds to 65 per cent. Although some of this decrease can be attributed to COVID-19, the fall had already started before the pandemic began.
Gerwyn Davies, Senior Labour Market Advisor at The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), commented; “With unemployment set to increase sharply over the next year as more stringent migration restrictions are introduced, it’s inevitable that more overseas workers, especially EU jobseekers, will find it easier to work or seek work in other parts of the EU.
“This won’t concern employers too much in the short-term while recruitment activity remains weak. However, the worry is that the combined impact of the apparent exodus of EU workers and the continued, subdued flow of EU jobseekers in particular will feed into recruitment difficulties in the medium-term.”
The CIPD has asked the Government to increase investment in training so that UK workers will have the skills required to make up for the fall in migrant workers. There has also been a call for changes to the incoming points-based system, including a recommendation to scrap the general salary threshold of £25,600 which is particularly going to affect traditionally lower-paid industries like the hospitality sector.
It’s important to remember that, despite the Brexit doom and gloom, you still have a lot of options available when you want to recruit the very best team members from 2021 onwards. Despite the predicted fall in EU candidates, your next star workers will always be out there, but you have to attract them before your competitor does.
Offering a more competitive pay rate is one thing you can do.
Establishing yourself as an employer who values their staff, rewards their commitment, and cares about their welfare, is another.
After all, your staff are the most vital part of your organisation and finding the team members who’ll work hardest for you and represent your business in the most efficient, friendly and professional way possible has never been more essential. One of the guaranteed time-tested ways to do that is by offering a competitive rate of pay and demonstrating how much you value their worth, health, and happiness.
Making your workplace a great place to work is important too. An employer or manager who takes time to notice and praise their staff, listens to their opinions and takes action to address their concerns, offers opportunities for training and development, and shows appreciation whenever possible is somebody the highest-quality candidates will always want to work with.
As we’ve discussed in previous blogs, widening your net and having a more flexible recruitment policy will reap dividends as well. Don’t limit yourself by looking for only one particular type of candidate when part-timers, trainees, or people with a terrific work record but who are new to the hospitality industry could be just as perfect in the role. Keep your expectations open and make it as easy as possible for the most talented, dedicated people to find you.
